"Where were these people before?"

I can't speak definitively about the whole crowd, but of the group I was with, all of us had done work on the state of human rights in China. In some cases, over a decade's worth. What's different now, however, is the opportunity for media attention.

Given the struggle to get the media to notice these kinds of issues, it's important to take advantage of the media's attention while it holds.

Many thanks for your comments.

Yes its true, there are two sides to each story. What has been most surprising is how everyone has suddenly jumped onto the Tibet bandwagon within a month or so's period. Where were these people before?

China has a concern with human rights and cultural freedoms, no doubt about it. But so do a lot of other countries. A boycott is definately not the answer.

It is interesting that the Chinese have started an annual Human Rights Record of the US in response to critisism: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2008-03/13/content_6533800.htm
